Web 2.0: Hype or Reality?

Published by at 12:29 pm under Web 2.0 Course

Web 2.0 has really created a whole new buzz among people who use the Internet for several purposes. If we surf the Net from time to time, we can’t help but find some references to Web 2.0. The term Web 2.0 began with Dale Dougherty of the O’Reilly Media together with Craig Cline of MediaLive when they were brainstorming for the apt term. So what is Web 2.0 after all?

Is it just some term that most Web developers and personalities spread so that they may create a lot of followers thereby improving their online business? Since the Web has become a collection of links from various users online, today it has become a very highly source of information, an interactive medium, and a good start for conducting a business. The technologies that have supported Web 2.0 provided the users a rich experience of making use of the information found on the Web in a lot of unique ways.

What is Web 2.0?

With Web 2.0, it’s more than just the technologies behind it. As we already know, it has encompassed social interactions and an assortment of business models. It can be considered as one of the first few concepts that were able to combine social, technical, and business theories successfully. Web 2.0 has been cited in three different definitions:

1. Web 2.0 is an evolution of the web sites from inaccessible information to the sources of functionality and content.

2. It is a social event which refers to the direct approach of creating and sharing of Web content which is primarily characterized by an open communication, the freedom to use and share information, and the devolution of authority.

3. It is a fast change in the Web’s economic value, which can be quite compared to the dot com boom which happened during the late 1990s.

Though a lot of us have tried to search what’s this entire buzz about, Web 2.0 can be simply defined as a new and radical shift on the World Wide Web which has the ability to allow its users to interact with the available data which we could never have imagined if we were living ten years ago. In fact, it makes things easier because of the applications that can be found on the Web.

How Web 2.0 provides democracy

With so many applications that provides people the freedom to voice their very own thoughts, Web 2.0 type-sites are very popular these days. Not only through blogs could people show online democracy but also through a lot of photo-sharing communities. Reviews or comments are also welcome to improve online interaction between users so as to provide readers interesting lines of conversation.

Is Web 2.0 just hype?

Whatever the term may be, it really isn’t that important. What’s important is seeing the way the Web  transform into a better medium which allows us to enjoy the interaction in a lot of ways and the sharing of information between the users.
Web 2.0 has allowed us to be able to connect to people from around the world in such a professional and stylish way. With this era, interactivity is one of the bigger terms, thereby placing the controls to the user who wishes to take part in sharing and reusing everything that can be found on the Web.
